Support Program for International Students (Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students)

This is a program that provides scholarships to privately funded international students who have excellent academic and personal skills and who have difficulty studying due to financial reasons.
Eligibility conditions Privately funded international students who have achieved excellent results in the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and are planning to newly enroll as a full-time student
Scholarship amount 48,000 yen per month
Payment period In principle, one year from April to March of the following year, or six months from October to March of the following year

Student Exchange Support Program Scholarship (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan)

A program that offers support through scholarships for qualified international students who are accepted under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangement on a short-term basis from 8 days to one year from a higher educational institution outside Japan.

Eligible students
  • Accepted by a Japanese school under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangement with their home school
  • Not having the financial means to study in Japan
  • Eligible for a ‘Student Visa’ (For study in Japan for 90 days or less, Japanese school will arrange the status of residence. )
  • Upon termination of the period of study in Japan, will complete their studies at their home school
  • Demonstrated excellent academic and personal records at their home schoolStudents receiving more than 80,000 JPY in total from other scholarships for study in Japan are ineligible for this scholarship

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation)

This is a Japanese government-sponsored international student program. Applications can be made via an “Embassy Recommendation”, which is provided by Japanese diplomatic missions abroad.

Eligible students
  • Vocational school international students: Those who are between 17 and 24 years old and have completed a 12-year course in school education or have completed a course in a school corresponding to a Japanese high school (including those who will graduate soon)
  • Advanced vocational school international students: Those who are between 17 and 24 years old and have completed a school course equivalent to high school (a total of 11 years or more from elementary school) (including those who will graduate soon)
Scholarship amount 117,000 yen per month
Payment period
  • Vocational school international students: 3 years including Japanese language education
  • Advanced vocational school international students: 4 years including Japanese language education (4.5 years if majoring in the merchant shipping field)
